Rethinking Granite Bay Schools Welcome to today’s Healthy Granite Bay Children blog. This site is dedicated to promoting children’s health in the Granite Bay area.

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last 20 years, you have heard about the obesity epidemic among U.S. children.

There are many worthwhile programs in the Granite Bay community that promote healthy eating habits and increased exercise for our youngest residents. I came across an interesting article last week that focused on how the design of schools can affect children’s health in general and obesity rates in particular.

‘Many schools were planned without thought given to how students can safely walk or ride their bikes to school. Playgrounds have been cut from budgets. An overemphasis on competitive sports has created a disproportionate amount of funding going to a select group of high profile sports, while minimizing the opportunities for the majority of students who desperately need exercise.’ Joel K. Here are some suggestions for making schools fitness-friendly:

  • Incorporate features of professional health clubs
  • Partner with community fitness centers to create multi-use facilities
  • Combine electronic entertainment and exercise
  • Incorporate movement into lesson plans

As we plan for new and renovated Granite Bay schools, let’s take our children’s fitness into consideration. As Granite Bay parents and educators, we can also promote lesson plans that incorporate movement. I also believe we need to look at how our tax dollars are spent. Do competitive sports programs in California receive more than their fair share of available funds? Could we better use this money to provide exercise opportunities for all Granite Bay children?

I encourage you to raise awareness of these issues in your California city. The only thing that will spur change is if parents, educators, and government leaders work together to lower the obesity rates in our California communities.

What is CRP And Why Is It Important For Orangevale?

Granite Bay Health Chocolate Hi, I am Orangevale Xocai blogger JJ Birden. Today’s post explores the link between CRP levels, inflammation and heart disease. What is CRP? CRP is a measure of C-reactive protein in the blood. You can get your CRP tested when you get your cholesterol measured. A high level of CRP tells you that inflammation is present in your body.

The health dangers of inflammation are well established. If your blood vessels are inflamed, you may be at risk for heart disease. A high CRP level can occur even if no other heart disease risk factors are present. The Mayo Clinic has an article on this if you want to read more.

What does this have to do with Xocai health chocolate?

Antioxidants lower CRP levels, thereby reducing inflammation. The main ingredient in Xocai healthy chocolate is cacao. Cacao is the #1 Antioxidant Food.

The National Institute of Aging conducted a study in 2004 which found a link between antioxidant supplements and lower CRP levels. According to the researchers: “taking an antioxidant supplement was associated with CRP levels similar to those seen in those who exercised 180 minutes/week or more and did not take supplements.“

I am certainly not recommending that you stop exercising. I just wanted to point out that the NIA study showed just how effective antioxidant supplements are in reducing CRP levels even in people who do not exercise. Obviously, the best combination for heart health is antioxidant consumption coupled with regular exercise.
